Shawnee citizen Jeremy Turner discusses the history of Ohio's original Shawnee Tribe and their forced migration westward. He'll share how tribal communities are maintaining a vibrant culture.
Guest speaker Jeremy Turner will discuss the history of the Shawnee People from the Fort Ancient People and their forced removal out of Ohio.
Attendees will learn about historical movements of the Shawnee communities in Ohio because of attacks and encroachment, as well as the forced removal of the Shawnee into Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.
The presentation will conclude with a look at the three separate Shawnee communities today and what they are doing to keep their culture alive and vibrant.
JEREMY TURNER is an enrolled citizen of the Shawnee Tribe and a descendant of the Wyandotte and Seneca-Cayuga Nations. He has been actively researching the material culture and social organization of the historical Ohio Country tribes for the past 25 years.
Jeremy is an active participant in all three of his communities’ Ceremonial Grounds, now located in Oklahoma. Jeremy and his family are active in providing historical presentations and living history programs to various historical sites, museums, and institutions across the traditional homelands of his communities.
He enjoys spending time hunting, trapping, fishing and growing traditional varieties of corn, beans, squashes and tobacco in his gardens.
