How Will I Cope if I Need More Assistance?
We may be appropriately congratulating ourselves on our ability to remain active and independent while aging. However, as we continue in the aging process, the “wheels may begin to come off.” We may no longer be able to drive, take care of our yard work, prepare our meals, or even deal with our financial commitments. We may experience short periods of needing help following surgeries or accidents. Or disabilities may generate longer-term needs.
In this meeting, we will challenge each other to consider what our Plan B will look like. Do we have family members who can provide support? Could an organization like Village in the Ville fill in some of the gaps in our independence? How about help from a home care agency like Right at Home? Or Independent Assisted Living?
We know that challenges likely lie ahead at some point. These challenges will only create a crisis for us if we have no plan to address them. Let’s think about the unthinkable, and we may find some ideas regarding assistance we have never considered.
Betsy Smalley (retired social worker, Clintonville resident, and member of Village in the Ville) will facilitate this group discussion. Bring your own thoughts to share!
